Bought a PS2 in 2003, gave it up in 08 and it still worked perfectly.
I LIKE THE FINAL FANTASY 13 saga.

Because regular HD just isn't good enough.

Consider yourself lucky. I just had to replace the controller ports in my PS2 from 2002 and it still has a flakey AV port. Then there's the countless people with Disc Read problems.

Naw I don't consider myself lucky. No one I knew that had a PS2 experienced any problems with the console. My uncle got his at launch and it was still in good condition in 2010. Sadly it was stolen.

Funny, I've had issues with mine and I've taken great care of it over the years. I know other people who have had issues as well. Problems ranging from Disc Read Errors, Loose AV connectors, worn out/cracked cables for the Controller Port Board, etc. are pretty common on the PS2. Hell I know tons of people who went out and bought new PS2's when they reached $99.99 just so they had a back up for when theirs eventually broke or to replace their recently broken one.

The PS2 had it's fair share of technical problems, no matter how much you want to ignore it. And let's not even get started with the Original Playstation's horrible build quality or the YLOD issue that's pretty much killing 60GB PS3's left and right. The point here is that even though the 360 had a lot of technical issues, Sony isn't perfect in this area either. For some reason though people just like to pretend the issues with Sony's consoles don't exist.

Could the PS3 become the PS2 of the 2010s?
Somehow, I cannot entertain the thought. The PS2 is like a standard beginner's console. If you're starting with DarkBASIC or Unity, grab a PS2 and get to work. Noob to games, hate the Wii, and not shelling out money for 360/PS3? Here you go.
The PS3 just comes off as far more technical. This might soften over the years (I'm sure no one thought the PS2 would still, to this day, be backed by decent sales ten years ago.)

This late into the game I really don't care much for sales figures but hey if they come out on top good for them they have easily had the best game line up this generation.Hell we still have new exclusives coming to the Ps3.Besides Gears Judgement and Pandora's Tower I really don't know what else exclusive wise is coming the the 360 and Wii.
“I like this energy, so it’s ok with me," he said. "If I had to choose money or energy, I would choose energy.” Nishigaki was never one to dwell on sales figures and once commented, “If one person likes Illbleed, then to me, it’s a success.”
