    Default Sally's in Sonic 1?

I found this topic over at the Saturday Morning Sonic forums.
    http://www.saturdaymorningsonic.com/...php?f=4&t=1657

The picture is of a promotional Sonic 1 figurine showing Ricky the Squirrel, only his fur is lighter, and he's a she, and his name is Sally Acorn.

I also found this article at Sonic HQ.
    http://archive.sonic-hq.net/newsite/cartoon/before/

It looks like Sally Acorn is the official name of Ricky in America and Europe, and thus Sally is in Sonic 1, and predates Amy Rose by one year.

Also, the Article gives us all of the official names of the tiny animals in Sonic 1.

While a squirrel named Sally Acorn may have been in the games, I think the relation between this Sally and the one of the comics stops at name and species (well, and the fact that they're in Sonic media). On a similar note, Mighty was an early Sonic design, and Vector was apparently intended for a soundtest menu that didn't make it into the first game.

But that squirrel wasn't considered a main character, or playable, just an animal that needed to be rescued from those dumb robots.
Amy was considered a main character in CD so in Japans logic, Amy would've come before that Chipmunk/Squirrel, since the Japanese name was Ricky the Squirrel.

Just because the Americans called the squirrel 'Sally Acorn' doesn't mean that he/she was there from the start, since the first Sonic game was made in Japan.

If 'Ricky' was named Sally Acorn in the Japanese version of Sonic, than I would've believed that Sally came first. But since Ricky was the name of the squirrel in Sonic 1. I do not believe that Sally came before Amy.

P.S. I'm kinda ticked off that the Americans replaced Amy's name in the 'enclosed instruction book' of Sonic CD with Sally's name. I thought that was just stupid.

Yes well I hate Sally Acorn anyway so I see no reason for me to care. The title of this topic seemed interesting enough though.

The game itself was made in Japan, but the game, and consequently the manual containing the names, was released in America first, meaning the american names predate the japanese ones, since they don't exist outside the manuals anyway.

I just wonder why the Americans put Sally's name in the manual when Amy's the one appearing in the game and getting kidnapped in the first place. But you do have a point with the characters not being outside the manual.

And they never did specify the gender of the animals in the game.

It was an attempt to promote the then fledgling comic. A rather lazy attempt.
