He's not quite an idiot, but he takes things way too fast, before he completely thinks things through.
But Robotnik's reign over "Mobius" (for those of you who still believe in the planet's continuity while it was actually Earth) is a staple to Sonic's past. And since then, Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik has tried to reign again once more.
SatAM is considered totally non-canon, but if you ask me it's showing the world as it was before and during the original Genesis trilogy and showed a new side of Sonic that fit well with older audiences. But it was light enough with a considerable amount of dark to be something that all ages could enjoy. Kind of like Unleashed. Eggmanland was vaguely reminescent of some SatAM elements (Eggman's heads in the park, the factories out billowing out smoke, etc.)
I still think of this as one of the coolest cartoons ever alongside AoStH and Invader Zim.
