From how the homing attack is made, sometimes you can "home" into things that you did not intend to home into, and sometimes you can use the homing technique, and you're not at the correct distance away from the target, and you possibly fall into a bottomless pit.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5tf5uD-d_M A little bit after 1:02 demonstrates this. Unleashed's system is a lot better than Sonic 06's. Though, I feel regardless of how much they refine things, the minor problems like this will generally exist.

Though, in the 3D perspective, homing attack is practically necessary if we are to continue with the "jump on top of the enemy" element when it comes to attacking. To see what I mean, simply play a game like Unleashed and attempt to killing the enemies without the use of the homing attack, or boost technique.

Believe it or not, a lot of people do have issues with the homing attack. More typically old-generation fans.
It's Awsome in Adventure 1&2....

Stiff and Over Used in 06.....

And Over Used in Secret Rings and Unleashed.

Some old-generation fans are open to the new abilities in the 3D games, and some aren't. Me, personally, I'm more against it than accepting it.
